Ontario government's Sunshine List has local names

ALMAGUIN — From cops to principals, there’s plenty of locals on this year’s Sunshine List.

Every spring, the province releases the salaries of all public sector employees who earned over $100,000 in the previous year.

This year, 42,527 made the so-called Sunshine List, with a number related to the Almaguin region.

The only local municipal employee on this year’s list is East Ferris chief administrative officer (CAO)-clerk, Raymond Champagne at $107,519.

Police/courts

The law and order sector continues to be a lucrative business.

Local police officers making the list include now-retired Almaguin Highlands OPP staff-sergeant Bill Ayotte, who brought home $109,786.

Tim Sheppard, acting staff-sergeant after Ayotte’s fall retirement, received $101,060.

Other northeastern Ontario OPP brass on the list include commander Irving Sloss at $118,260, supervisor Jeff Dagg at $107,691 and commander Ken Miller at $144,885.

The North Bay Police Service had 15 of its employees on the list. Chief Paul Cook took home $147,051 in 2007.

On the court side, judge Lawrence Klein was paid $225,234 last year. Crown attorney Edward Carlton received $162,457. Assistant Crown attorneys Wesley Beattie and David Holmes took home $136,274 and $155,955, respectively.

Education

Many local school board employees made the list.

There are 11 representatives from the Near North District School Board (NNDSB) on the list. Topping them off are superintendent of business Tom Shultz and director of education Heli Vail, both at $135,235.

Three superintendents of schools and program made the list: Susan Adamson at $105,945, Patrick Bocking at $120,340 and Kelly Brown at $110,443.

Five secondary principals and one elementary principal made the list, including Almaguin Highlands Secondary School principal Ron Witmer at $107,719.

Six Nipissing-Parry Sound District Catholic School Board employees made the list. Director of education Anna Marie Bitonti took home $147,306. Joanne Benard, the superintendent of education, made $125,520 and Joe Bitonti, the principal of pathways for student success, made $106,036.

Conseil Scolaire Catholique Franco-Nord has 22 employees on the list, including director of education Raymond Lessard at $147,512 and superintendent of education Cynthia Roveda at $127,532.

Conseil Scolaire de District du Nord-East de L’Ontario has 13 employees in the $100,000-plus club, including director of education Michel Robineau at $136,139 and superintendent of education Ghislain Beaupré at $111,275.38.

Health care

The North Bay General Hospital (NBGH) had 14 employees on the Sunshine List.
President/CEO Mark Hurst collected $217,373 for his work in 2007. Richard Beauchamp, chief human resources officer, was paid $113,455. Glenn Scanlan, senior vice-president of corporation and facilities, got $172,518 and Tiziana Silveri, vice-president of surgery and maternal child care services, received $139,324.

David Smits, director of facilities, was paid $125,541; Doug Rogers, the director of finance, was paid $122,784 and Pat Stephens, director of public relations, was paid $105,610.

Paul Laundry, the executive director of the North Bay Regional Health Care project, was paid $158,733.

Two pharmacists, one pharmacy manager and two registered nurses rounded out NBGH’s list.

Moving south to Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC), president/CAO Barry Lockhard took home $192,885 in 2007.

John Frederick, chief financial and support services officer, made $134,810; Harold Featherston, chief professional/diagnostic services officer, made $119,225; and Beverley McFarland, chief nursing officer, made $125,313.

Rounding out MAHC’s list are two registered nurses and one registered technologist.

At the North Bay-Parry Sound District Health Unit, Dr. Catherine Whiting, medical officer of health, took home $213,757 last year. Peter Jekel, the unit’s director of environmental health, made $103,680, while Leeann Whitney, director of infectious diseases, just broke the threshold at $100,202.

At the Northeast Local Health Integration Network, CEO Remy Beaudoin made $196,424. Senior director Martha Auchinlek made $138,611 while Terry Tilleczek, senior director of planning and integration, made $139,720.

Seven executive and senior directors at the Northeast Community Care Access Centre are in the club, the highest being executive director Richard Hunt at $159,996.

Social services

Various social services positions also pay well. Jeffrey Hawkins, executive director of Algonquin Child and Family Services, took home $115,770 last year. Gisele Hebert and Gregory Dulmage, both executive directors at the Nipissing-Parry Sound branch of the Children’s Aid Society, took home $127,026 and $130,949, respectively.

At the local District Social Services Administration boards, Parry Sound’s Mark Fisher was paid $122,502 while Nipissing’s William White got $139,502.

Also of note

About 65 employees of Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) made the list. Many of these were conductors and engineers.

Steven Carmichael, president/CAO of ONTC, took home $192,252, while four vice-presidents — Cheryl Sutton, Paul Goulet, Randy Evers and Kevin Donnelly, took home between $125,000 and $140,000.

Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller made $129,352, while Nipissing MPP Monique Smith fared a bit better at $134,801.

Premier Dalton McGuinty was paid $203,439.

Topping the list was Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System Administration Corporation CEO/president Paul Haggis at $2.24 million.
