Rob Rymell, chairperson the Innisfil Heritage Committee, has tendered his resignation to Innisfil Council.
The resignation was dated April 4, the day after residents attended a committee meeting to express concern over the demolition of the Ness-Adair farmhouse on the 20th Sideroad north of Innisfil Beach Road.
Residents also wanted to see the former McConkey homestead, built in 1858, saved from demolition to make way for a commercial development including a Canadian Tire store.
In his correspondence, Rymell cited increased professional workload and personal commitments for his need to leave.
Rymell’s resignation from the voluntary position comes as Innisfil Council faces increased pressure to protect heritage properties from development.
At the heritage committee’s March 6 meeting it became clear the Ness-Adair home was slated for destruction. Minutes of the meeting show the committee requested “the County Museum be contacted to see if they wish to salvage any items from the potential destruction of the stone house on the north-east corner of Innisfil Beach Road and the 20th Side Road (Ness-Adair), or any other potential sites that may not be reserved.”
Council has accepted Rymell’s resignation and will seek to find a new chairperson, as well as advertise for a new Heritage Committee member.
