What was a 2007-2008 season of wandering from city to city in search of ice time came to an end March 15 in Orillia for the Sunrise Toyota Tundras Senior A Hockey Club.
A three-goal outburst by the Whitby Dunlops in the third period helped the visitors cruise to a 7-4 win over Tundras in front of 156 fans at the Brian Orser Arena.
With the win, Whitby claimed the best-of-seven Eastern Ontario Senior A Hockey League Robertson Cup championship series 4-0 in games.
The game at the Gill Street arena marked the first time a Senior A game has been played in Orillia since 1973.
Whitby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game four, before John Vecchiarrelli and Roy Mundy scored single markers for the Tundras to even the contest at 2-2. Kevin Shoebridge and Scott Goheen later scored for the home side, as the Tundras were able to tie the game at 4-4 just over five minutes into the second period.
But Whitby scored midway through the second period and added two more in the third period to pull out the 7-4 win.
The Tundras held a significant 57-37 edge in shots in the game, but Dunlops goaltender Chad Ford turned in a solid game between the pipes.
Ron Bertrand took the loss for the Sunrise Toyota.
The loss capped off a rollercoaster season for the Tundras, who began the season as the Cook's Bay Canucks, later the Simcoe County Canucks, playing home games in Innisfil before moving to Coldwater and later to Orillia.
Midway through the season, the team was purchased by Orillia businessman Tom Ruff. Ruff then hired veteran hockey coach Ray Flaherty on board as the team’s head coach and vice president of hockey operations.
In the league semifinals, the Tundras rallied from a 3-1 deficit the defeat the Frankford Huskies and earn a berth in the league final against Whitby.
