Re: Petition opposes court, Feb. 1

I am concerned and a little confused about the proposal to convert the Churchill Community Centre into a traffic court. The staff report that gave the breakdown of utilization rates is, I believe, a little misleading.
Daytime usage of the centre is low but how does this compare with other large facilities in the township? Are they more frequently used on weekdays, when most people are at work? Is it that people are not signing up for existing activities in Churchill or is that there are no programs offered at these times?
The centre is available for private rental but how many large functions are people realistically expected to schedule during the times mentioned as “underused”?
Councillor Rod Boynton has said that they are not trying to take away anything from residents. How will my two children and I walk to the free local playgroup on Mondays when court is in session on Mondays?
I have been reading about the empty space that will be in the new administration offices, available for rent. Why not put the traffic court in one of these spaces, while they are being completed? No renovation costs, and even lower mileage for the South Simcoe Police out of the Innisfil Beach Road detachment.
There will already be a large volume of traffic moving in and out of the administration building because of the other services available at the site. To create more traffic through the higher-density residential area in Churchill instead is senseless.
The only good that could come from creating a traffic court at the Churchill Community Centre would be if the police could then flag all the speeders along Yonge Street directly into the driveway to pay their fines immediately.
