A 35-year-old Innisfil man was killed when he was ejected from his SUV in a single vehicle crash on Innisfil Beach Road just west of Yonge Street Wednesday evening.
Police have not released the man’s name.
According to South Simcoe Police, a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee was travelling east at about 6:25 p.m. when it left the road, striking four mailboxes and a street sign.
The Jeep careened into a ditch and struck the end of a culvert, ejecting the driver. The Jeep rolled several times and caught fire after coming to a stop in a ditch near a home.
Enbridge gas workers who were on the scene Thursday morning said the Jeep came within about 20 feet of natural gas pipes sticking out of a front lawn. Had the Jeep struck those pipes there may have been an explosion, a worker said.
The workers received an “emergency call” about an exposed propane line, but were unable to locate one.
South Simcoe Police closed IBR for about seven hours Wednesday night as they reconstructed the crash.
Police are trying to determine why the driver left the road.
Officers would like to speak with a motorcycle driver who may have spoken with the driver of the Jeep while they were stopped at the intersection of Huronia Road (Sideroad 10) and Innisfil Beach Road just minutes before the crash.
