Two occupants of a taxicab were rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital after a collision at the intersection of Innisfil Beach Road and the 10th Sideroad Monday morning.
Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene where the driver and the passenger of a Georgian Cab sat immobilized in the front seat.
Witness Bill Spring said he was stopped to make a left-hand turn to go east on Innisfil Beach Road while a northbound blue van was signaling a left turn to head west on Innisfil Beach Road.
“We had a green light,” Spring told the Innisfil Journal. “The taxi came around me on the shoulder of the road, passed me, and went through the intersection.”
The cab t-boned the blue van. The driver of the van was unharmed, but her vehicle sustained considered damage in the middle of the passenger side.
Traffic along Innisfil Beach Road was backed up in both directions for more than an hour and rerouted onto the 10th Sideroad while emergency crews were at the scene.
A volunteer firefighter said despite traffic signals at the intersection, there are numerous accidents. A bystander agreed, saying many southbound motorists who are unfamiliar with the 10th Sideroad travel too fast and are ill-prepared to make a quick stop if the light is red.
In the past 15 years, there have been several fatalities at the intersection.
On Monday afternoon, a dispatcher at Georgian Taxi said both the driver and the passenger were “not hurt too badly” but he couldn’t discuss the incident or reveal the name of the driver, or passenger.
South Simcoe Police traffic officers remained at the scene early Monday afternoon conducting an investigation.
