South Simcoe Police is reminding cyclists to wear a helmet after a car struck a 12-year-old Alcona girl Friday.

She wasn’t wearing a helmet and was lucky to escape serious injury, police say.

The girl was hit at about 6:30 p.m. by a slow-moving vehicle near the intersection of Innisfil Beach Road and St. John’s Road.

The vehicle was making a right hand turn on a green light on to Innisfil Beach Road when the girl crossed in front of the car, police say.

The girl was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie to be treated for minor injuries.

Police are reminding drivers to take extra caution in residential areas as children can be unpredictable when maneuvering through the streets.
