Police are mounting a multi-pronged campaign that targets dangerous behaviors on land and in the water.

OPP officers will be out in full force over the Victoria Day long weekend in search of aggressive and impaired drivers, as well as those who fail to buckle up, said Commissioner Julian Fantino.

“We will be using two aircraft, our own and a rented plane, cruisers and boats to patrol the highways, trails and waterways of Ontario,” Fantino added.

Seven people died on OPP-patrolled roads during the 2007 May long weekend, police said.

The recent addition of a plane to its arsenal gives the provincial force another tool with which to combat drivers who flout the law, said Fantino.

“We have only been using the plane for about a week, but it is already having a positive effect on speeds on the 400-series of highways,” he added. “We are able to cover more ground quickly and more effectively than in the past.”

A second aircraft will patrol cottage country along Highway 69.

“With this weekend traditionally kicking off the summer driving season, we’re expecting to see significant increases in traffic,” said OPP Chief Supt. Bill Grodzinski, commander of the highway safety division.

Police are reminding drivers that anyone caught traveling at more than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit will have their vehicle impounded and their license suspended for seven days.

More than 4,500 drivers have already been charged under the legislation since its introduction in September.

Motorists are additionally reminded to move to the next lane when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road with its lights activated.
